YW Calgary is seeking a compassionate Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor to support women in our Transitional Housing program. This on-site, full-time position (30 hours per week, 0.8 FTE) focuses on delivering crisis intervention and counseling, as well as facilitating therapeutic and prevention groups based on evidence-based practices. Responsibilities
As a Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor, you will:
- Provide one-on-one counseling sessions addressing diverse needs in mental health and addiction for women in the Transitional Housing Program.
- Utilize therapeutic techniques to help clients identify and process emotions, develop coping strategies, and work toward individualized goals.
- Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to assess progress and ensure cohesive care.
- Plan and lead group therapy sessions tailored for women, fostering a safe environment for open discussion.
- Design group activities that promote skill development, peer support, and community building among participants.
- Provide immediate support to women in crisis, employing de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed principles.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records for each client, documenting progress, treatment interventions, and communication per regulatory standards.
- Facilitate preventative and treatment group programs aligned with the YW Practice Framework.
- Develop and evaluate treatment plans and therapeutic progress.
- Work collaboratively with service providers and stay informed about community resources in Calgary to support client goals.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this role, you should have:
- A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check.
- A Master’s degree in clinical psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field, with registration under the Health Professions Act.
- Knowledge of addiction, domestic violence, trauma, and mental health.
- Experience with interventions such as CBT, DBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and mind/body therapies.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build therapeutic relationships with complex clients.
- ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Competency in working with diverse populations, including cultural diversity, marginalized groups, various ages and abilities, and the LGBTQ2S+ community.
- Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary organization.
